This summer, Roni Asp, a recent OW and former member of Benson House, embarked on a three-month internship in Hangzhou, China as part of his gap year. Ronnie reflects on his educational journey at Wellington College and the institution’s core values.
Seizing the opportunity to step out of his comfort zone, Roni viewed China as the ideal environment for personal and professional growth. While initially encountering a culture shock due to the differences in cuisine, language, and social interactions, the dedicated teachers and staff at Wellington College China provided exceptional support and guidance.
With family ties to China—his mother being Chinese—Roni found his Mandarin language skills honed at Wellington College to be particularly valuable. His responsibilities during his time at Wellington College International Hangzhou included assisting with English and Physical Education lessons for primary students, where he played a pivotal role in supporting the teaching staff.
Roni praised Wellington College China for its dedication to replicating the values and historical essence of Wellington College in its international schools. Each international school works hard to reflect the ethos, traditions, and excellence that Wellington College in the UK is known for. This global connection ensures that no matter where a Wellington College student is, they receive a consistent, top-notch education that encourages intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and global awareness. He strongly advocates for internships abroad, describing them as enriching experiences that serve as excellent preparation for future endeavours.
To the current and future Year 13 students at Wellington College, Roni’s advice is straightforward: “Embrace opportunities, be courageous, and venture beyond your comfort zone.”
