Wellington College is pioneering global connectivity through The Big Gold Box, an innovative digital portal bridging students and staff with communities across the globe. This immersive experience, housed within a gold-painted shipping container, is equipped with cutting-edge video conferencing technology and a floor-to-ceiling screen that makes conversations feel strikingly real.

Created by Shared Studios, the project facilitates transformational discussions on human rights, climate change, cultural expression, and education. It has already hosted powerful exchanges with refugees in Iraq, Spanish-speaking communities in Mexico, and climate activists in Rwanda—offering students a rare opportunity to engage in meaningful global dialogue.
Under the leadership of Ana Romero, Head of Sustainability, members of the Wellington College International team recently connected with individuals in Mexico, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of global challenges.
The initiative has sparked a revolution in learning, reinforcing Wellington College’s commitment to innovation, global awareness, and skill development. By connecting students with real-world voices, it nurtures informed global citizens ready to shape the future.
Beyond Wellington College UK, Wellington College Hangzhou has also embraced The Big Gold Box, leading EdTech innovation in China. As the first school in the region to adopt this immersive experience, Hangzhou is at the forefront of cross-cultural engagement. With plans to integrate the technology permanently, pupils will soon connect daily with communities worldwide—including their peers in the UK.
