Wellington College embeds service, leadership and personal growth into every aspect of school life, with pupils encouraged to lead across academics, sport, the arts, community service and co‑curricular activities. At the heart of this culture is the Wellington Leadership and Coaching Institute (WLCI), the driving force behind the College’s ambition to develop leaders of character and purpose.
The WLCI provides a rigorous, research‑informed framework that shapes pupils into leaders grounded in courage, integrity, respect, responsibility and kindness. Its programmes centre on three pillars — character education, service, and leadership skill development — while intentionally cultivating the broader human competencies that underpin flourishing. Through this approach, pupils develop the personal and interpersonal capacities needed to lead with confidence, act with purpose and contribute positively to the communities they serve.
Leadership training
Leadership training is quality‑assured by Oxford University and enriched through partnerships with universities, charities and public‑sector organisations. Through WLCI pathways, students design and lead social‑action projects, contribute to major leadership events and pursue formal leadership accreditation. This is complemented by a strong wellbeing curriculum and global initiatives such as Global Social Leaders, helping pupils build both self‑awareness and a sense of global responsibility.
Coaching
Coaching is one of Wellington’s most distinctive strengths and a defining feature of the WLCI’s approach. Every member of staff is trained in coaching, and this mindset shapes daily interactions across the College. Coaching equips pupils with the reflective capacity, agency and personal insight needed to lead themselves before they lead others. By embedding coaching so deeply into its culture, Wellington ensures that leadership is not simply taught but lived—continuously strengthened through authentic practice and meaningful relationships across the community.
