Wellington College International is pleased to highlight the recent visit of Ana Romero, Head of Sustainability, to our Wellington College Education Network schools in China—a trip that placed student voices and climate action at the heart of every agenda.

Over several days, Ana met with Sustainability Committees and Global Social Leaders drawn from each of our international schools exchanging ideas on intergenerational equity, environmental responsibility, and the practical steps schools can take to accelerate positive change. Conversation ranged from cutting single-use plastics in boarding houses to designing student-run carbon-offset projects for future field trips.
A standout moment came at Hiba Academy Hangzhou, where pupils flipped the script and became reporters. They interviewed Ana for the school newsletter, then collaborated with the marketing team to film a short video that captures the spirit and ambitions of her visit. Their questions—focused on grassroots activism, green careers, and the power of peer influence—showcased both journalistic flair and a deep commitment to sustainability.
Reflecting on the tour, Ana emphasised how energising it is to see students driving the dialogue:
“Every conversation confirmed that when young people are given the platform, they quickly move from concern to concrete solutions. Our role is to amplify their ideas and remove obstacles in their path.”
Her time in China underscored a simple truth shared across the Wellington family: empowering pupils to lead sustainability initiatives not only enriches their education but also accelerates meaningful environmental progress for us all.
Wellington College International thanks the students and staff who organised forums, interviews, and filming sessions, and looks forward to showcasing the Hangzhou video once editing is complete.
